Did You Know? Malabon Edition

What You Didn’t Know About Malabon

Often strewn with the other cities of the Metro, the beauty of Malabon is often overlooked.

With its European-inspired architecture, an uncanny ability to preserve history, and rich culture, the city prides itself on many things. We bet you might only know Malabon when it’s in the news because of the flooding caused by storms. Alas, Malabon has so much to offer.

Did you know that Malabon played a part in the nation’s history?

It is said that Malabon was named after the phrase “maraming labong” which translates to “plenty of bamboo shoots” so we can infer from that name what Malabon was famous for in the olden days. All kidding aside, though, Malabon is the seat of numerous historical events.

For one, it was founded by Augustinian friars in 1599. It originally was a “visita” of Tondo and lasted as such until 1688. It also served as the literary center during the Spanish Colonization in 1896. It is where “La Independencia” was printed. A bit of history recap for all those who forgot; La Independencia is regarded to be the most famous revolutionary publication during the Spanish Colonization.

Did you know that Malabon produced notable brands and companies?

You might be surprised that multiple staples of our Filipino dining table came from Malabon. We’re not talking about the Pancit Malabon but you have to admit, it is a staple and we all love it. We’re talking about three notable food brands; The Aristocrat, Mama Sita’s, and Rufina.

What’s cooler is that all three were founded by women. Mothers, to be exact, started out simply wanting to feed their families which eventually grew into centuries-old brands. Rufina was created by Mrs. Rufina Salao vda de Lucas in 1900. The Aristocrat brand started as an eatery by Engracia “Lola Asiang” Cruz-Reyes and her daughter, Teresita “Mama Sita” Reyes created Mama Sita’s.
