Moving Out…At Your Age

Will it ever be too late or too early?

In the Philippines, we don’t have a specific age range when we finally move out of our parents’ house. In other countries, in Western countries for example, once you turn 18 or 21 you start looking for a place of your own. There’s a craving for independence from both parties – the child moving out and the parents – so the hunt for a good place is fairly early on in their lives.

For Filipinos, it depends. It varies and it’s different per life stage. Perhaps, we could give you a glimpse of what it’s like moving out at a certain age.

Moving out in your 20s

The quintessential time for a person to move out. Well, according to other countries and pop culture. It’s the decade of self-discovery. It’s a tumultuous time in your life with bouts of constant changes in your world and yourself.

Moving out in your 20s is an act of liberation. It’s your way of showing that you are (most definitely) an adult. Safe to say, though, your funds aren’t sky-high yet and you might or might not have found your career path. So, moving in your 20s provides you with limited resources and square space.

Your parents might not be so keen on you moving away during this time unless it is incredibly necessary. Rest assured, they will try to convince you to move with a relative or near one. So, there’s that to worry and haggle about with Mom and Dad.

Moving out in your 30s

You’re either financially stable enough to afford a nice place in a safe and probably high-end neighborhood or you’re moving to your own family house with your spouse. Either way, congratulations are in order.

Your 30s is when you have finally found your pace in life. You’ve found your calling, your path, and who you are, essentially. You might even have found the one meant for you and are on your way to making a family of your own.

This time, you’re looking for something more spacious and with better amenities. You now have options in what kind of place you’ll be living in and where you’ll be residing. You’ve developed a routine for yourself already and you look for a place that can work around it.

Moving out in your 40s and 50s

You’ve settled down and have a family of your own but there’s also a high possibility – given our family-oriented society – you live with extended family. However, opportunities might drive you to move out. In Filipino, it’s called “bumukod” and usually entails a move that takes you and your family far from what you have grown accustomed to.

Whether you move out in your 20s, 30s, or 40s, or even take your whole extended family with you, your main goal is still to find a place that you can call home. Somewhere safe, and clean, and provides a sense of comfort and little joy in life.
