It’s scary but totally worth it

You know that reel audio of Taylor Swift saying; “Scary news is: you’re on your own now. Cool news is: You’re on your own now.”? If you search it on either TikTok or Instagram, you’ll see that it’s used on videos of people moving out to a different country or state or out of their parent’s house. It’s a short and sweet statement Taylor made during her commencement speech after receiving the Doctor of Fine Arts honor last May 18, 2022, from New York University. Simple, and short, but holds true to the beauty of venturing on your own. 

True, it is downright terrifying to live on your own. You’re in charge of yourself now and maybe a few fur babies. No one will be picking up after you. No one will have a ready-cooked meal for you when you get home. No one is going to clean your house, do the dishes, or do the laundry. No one’s going to pay the bills for you and no one is going to make that scary call to a provider. It all falls on your shoulders. You’re a full-fledged adult now and you have responsibilities. 

However, with all these found responsibilities comes a sense of freedom. You can be whoever you want in your own home. You can dance to that cringe-worthy song in your house clothes. You can plan your own meals, now. However, ice cream does not constitute dinner, and skipping meals is still unhealthy. You can cultivate your own morning and night routine that will actually benefit you. You have your own little world to yourself and you can paint it however you like. 

We think that’s the beauty of moving out and venturing on your own. You’re finally brave enough to step out into the world, face it head-on, and take care of yourself.
