What’s So Great About Malabon?

A look at an untapped gem of a city in the middle of the Metro

Despite being a landlocked and highly urbanized city, Malabon has its fair share of gems. In spite of the reputation of being a flood-prone city, we can see a sprawling urban city bustling with life, culture, and history.

Here are five things that makes Malabon great:

  1. A rich history

It is said that Malabon was named after the phrase “maraming labong” which translates to “plenty of bamboo shoots”. All kidding aside, though, Malabon is the seat of numerous historical events.

For one, it was founded by Augustinian friars in 1599. It originally was a “visita” of Tondo and lasted as such until 1688. It also served as the literary center during the Spanish Colonization in 1896. Not only that, but it is where “La Independencia” was printed; La Independencia is regarded to be the most famous revolutionary publication during the Spanish Colonization.

  1. An ode to Nature

Malabon boasts its own zoo, aquarium, and botanical garden. So, no need to travel all the way to Baguio to behold a beautiful array of flowers or to Manila Zoo to avoid the crowd. It houses and takes care of an array of wildlife that you can actually interact with! The Malabon Zoo, Aquarium, and Botanical Garden is open every day from 8 AM to 7 PM.

  1. A place of religious pilgrimage

Looking to go on a quick pilgrimage? You can visit the San Bartolome church. You can even schedule your visit to partake in Malabon City’s Pagoda-Caracol. It’s an annual celebration of the Feast of Our Lady Immaculate Conception that happens every December 8. It’s a joint celebration of both the Catholic and Aglipay church and is filled with colorful and lively processions to and from Malabon and its neighboring city Navotas.

  1. A cuisine to feed you for days

Foodies are welcome in Malabon City. Let’s start with an obvious must-try – the Pancit Malabon. It’s famous and incredibly prolific at every Filipino table whenever there’s a get-together. Malabon is also known as a fishing district along with Navotas and its production of seafood and fish paste.

Also, a tip from Malabon residents is to visit Concepcion where you can try any type of cuisine you can think of. A bit of Little Singapore, anyone?

  1. Affordable luxury

Malabon doesn’t only offer tourist spots and day trip destinations. It can also offer a possible future for you and your family!
